The Women’s Institute – Oakwood WI
Oakwood WI is very popular and well attended. It was first established in 2023 and is part of the West Yorkshire Federation of Women’s Institutes.
The WI is a unique organisation shaped by its members. In 1915, we set out to give women a voice and to be a force for good in the community. Since then, our members and our ambitions have grown tremendously. Today, we are the largest women’s organisation in the UK, priding ourselves on being a trusted place for all women of all generations, to share experiences and learn from each other.
We campaign nationally on a wide range of issues and provide life-long learning and self-development opportunities for women in England and Wales.
A WI membership offers the opportunity to meet women in your local area in-person (and virtually), to make friends and make a difference in your community.
What can you expect from the Oakwood WI?
Each WI is different as each strives to satisfy the needs of its members. Most WIs meet once a month and must schedule at least 11 meetings each year. For meeting dates you can check the Oakwood Church Calendar for WI Room Bookings, or contact the Oakwood WI Secretary (see below).
Meetings typically consist of a short business section followed by either an entertaining speaker, a demonstration, a slide show or a hands-on workshop/activity. Whatever is on the programme there will always be time to socialise, enjoy refreshments, meet new friends and ‘have fun’.
Federation
The West Yorkshire Fedeeration is based in an office by the canal at Rodley. It aims to ensure that members get the most from their membership. It runs events organized by various teams who work hard to provide workshops and events, outings and holidays across a vast range of subjects to ensure there is really something to suit everyone. Events give members the opportunity to learn something new in a friendly atmosphere and provide opportunities to meet up with members of other WIs and exchange tips and ideas. They are great fun, so why not give some a try? The Federation teams are all volunteers, and all are all WI members. The West Yorkshire Federation has a monthly newsletter – West Yorkshire News (WYN) and this is available to all members as a paper copy or an eWYN. It keeps members informed of what is happening in our Federation and communicates information from the National Federation of Women’s Institutes who publish the magazine WI Life.
