Premier Taekwondo Leeds
Tae Kwon Do (also known as Taekwondo) is a self-defense art that originated in South Korea. It is recognized as one of the oldest martial arts in the world, reaching back over 2,000 years. The name was selected for its appropriate description of the art: Tae (foot), Kwon (hand), Do (art).
It is suitable for adults and children who like a challenge and want to improve themselves everyday. As with all martial arts, Taekwondo teaches good values which stay with you. The art emphasises courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and combativeness – known by Taekwondo practitioners as the ‘indomitable spirit’.
The art is based on strikes, punching and kicking techniques, not grapples.
Learning Taekwondo involves learning both combat and self-defence techniques. During a Taekwondo class, a poomse (pattern of defense and attack) may involve imaginary combat against one or more adversaries; or combat against a partner who helps you develop your technique.
Taekwondo, in its most well known format, combat, has been an Olympic sport since 2000. The sport requires the wearing of suitable protection. Strikes are only allowed above the waist and the points a combatant receives are allocated based on the level of difficulty of the techniques deployed.
Taekwondo is a physical activity that helps improve flexibility, energy and speed. It helps cardio and burns calories. It’s also relaxing and great for releasing endorphins – the ‘happy hormone’.
Almost anyone can try Taekwondo and everyone’s fitness starting point is different. Classes are aimed at making progress from your starting point. It’s not about being better than somebody else but about being better than you were yesterday. Your fitness level will inevitably improve as you learn and practice the art.
