Preparing young people with skills for life

Every week Scouting gives half a million 4-25 year olds the skills they need for school, college, university, the job interview, that important speech, the tricky challenge, their big dreams – the skills they need for life.

Everyone is welcome. Young people and adults of all genders, ages, ethnicities, beliefs and social backgrounds.

Scouts are do-ers and give-it-a-goers.

Regardless of you or your child’s physical ability there is a Scouting adventure waiting to be enjoyed.

Yes Scouts like to go camping, hiking, climbing, cycling and canoeing but we also get to hang out with friends, have fun, play games, discover new things, work together in teams and take on new challenges.

Since 1932 Oakwood Church has Sponsored our Group’s activities but it does not manage or subsidise them.

In July 2022 we celebrated our 90th Anniversary by involving everyone in a hugely enjoyable post-COVID Group Camp at nearby Wike Scout Campsite.

Here at the 9th North Leeds Scout Group we offer Beaver, Cub and Scout sections. (Other local Scout Groups may offer: Squirrels – ages 4 to 6 years; Explorers – ages 14 to 18 years; and Network – ages 18 to 25 years).

Giving back will improve your wellbeing, equip you with skills for the future and help you make a positive impact on the lives of young people.

Volunteering is not just about giving back – it goes both ways. It can be a brilliant way to boost your wellbeing and develop new skills for the future. It’s a great feeling knowing you’re helping young people get skills for life and you will learn a lot about yourself.

There are lots of ways you can get more involved as an individual or as a parent, carer or family member, from helping out occasionally on a ‘parents rota’, or playing a vital role behind the scenes such as a member of the Group Trustee Board, as Group Lead Volunteer, Section Team Leader, Section Team Member or Occasional Helper. Our Group Administrator and Group Quartermaster provide vital support to our Group Leadership Team and Group Trustee Board.

You don’t have to have been a Scout or a Parent, an outdoor expert, or even relatively young and fit to volunteer. The volunteering opportunities are as varied as you. We are talking tidy-uppers and tea-makers, event organisers, IT navigators, administrators, experience sharers, muckers-in and all-round team players.

The good news is that you can shape what you do and the time you have to give. Scouting only happens because a lot of us give a little and because some of us have capacity to give a bit more.

You can expect:

Volunteering roles at 9th North Leeds Scout Group include:

Flexible role sharing makes it possible to fit volunteering around your availability.

Occasional helpers Whether you’d like to be an activity planner, craft creator, skill sharer or whatever, we will appreciate any time you can spare. If you can only help occasionally, that’s okay. No two weeks are the same and your contribution, however small, will make a huge difference to the lives of our young people.

Expenses Volunteers can claim necessary expenses e.g. if you needed to: travel for training; to organise an event; represent the Group at a District meeting; etc.

Enquiries

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Are we meeting this week and if so when and where?

A. The Calendar at Oakwood Church shows room bookings. Better still, look at your Section Programme or ask your Team Leader.

Q. Oakwood Church is our Sponsoring Authority. Do you have to have a religious belief to attend Scouts?

A. Oakwood Church welcomes all of our Scouts to a Parade Service on the 2nd Sunday of some months. You don’t have to identify as a Christian to attend, and you don’t have to attend if you don’t want to.

Q. What Subscriptions does the 9th North Leeds Scout Group ask for?

A. At the 9th North Leeds Scout Group our Beaver, Cub and Scout subscriptions are excellent value. From the start of Summer Term 2025, they are just £35 per Term – payable when each Term begins. Uniform, camps, some activities and outings may involve extra costs. Scouting prides itself on being a fully inclusive organisation, so if any parent or carer finds it difficult to pay for subscriptions, uniform, activities or outings, please speak in confidence to one of our Leaders so we can discreetly ensure your young person is not left out.
