Preparing young people with skills for life
Everyone is welcome. Boys and girls, in fact all genders, ages, ethnicities, beliefs and backgrounds.
Scouts are do-ers and give-it-a-goers.
Regardless of your child’s physical ability there is a Scouting adventure waiting for them to enjoy.
Yes Scouts sometimes go camping, hiking, climbing, cycling and canoeing. But we also get to hang out with friends every week, having fun, playing games, working in a team and taking on new challenges.
Every week Scouting gives half a million 4-25 year olds the skills they need for school, college, university, the job interview, that important speech, the tricky challenge, their big dreams – the skills they need for life.
Since 1932 Oakwood Church has Sponsored our Scout activities but it does not manage or subsidise them. In July 2022 we celebrated by involving everyone in a hugely enjoyable 90th Anniversary Group Camp at Wike Campsite.
Here at the 9th North Leeds Scout Group we offer Beaver, Cub and Scout sections. Other local Scout Groups may offer: Squirrels (ages 4 to 6 years); Explorers (ages 14 to 18 years); Network (ages 18 to 25 years).

Volunteer
Giving back will improve your wellbeing, equip you with skills for the future, and help you make a positive impact on the lives of young people.
9th North Leeds Scout Group
All Scouting activities at Oakwood Church are run by unpaid volunteers.
Volunteering is not just about giving back – it goes both ways. It can be a brilliant way to boost your wellbeing and gives you skills for the future. It’s a great feeling knowing you’re helping young people get skills for life, and you will learn a lot about yourself along the way.
There are lots of ways you can get more involved as a parent, carer or family member. From helping out occasionally on a ‘parents rota’, or playing a vital role behind the scenes such as on the Group Executive, to stepping up as a Occasional Helper, Section Assistant, or Leader.
No, you don’t have to be a Scout, a Parent, an outdoor expert, or even relatively young and fit to volunteer. The volunteering opportunities are as varied as you. We are talking tidy-uppers and tea-makers, event organisers and Zoom navigators, quartermasters and treasurers, experience sharers and all round team players.
The good news is that you shape what you do and the time you have to give. Scouting only happens when a lot of us give a little…
You can expect:
- A warm welcome. You will make friends and meet people.
- Flexibility to get involved in a way that works for you.
- Friendly ongoing support from other local volunteers.
- Try new things and challenge yourself.
- Get outdoors and get stuck in.
- Easy access to training and resources online.
- Create vital opportunities for young people
- Positively impact our local community.
- Experience the strong sense of satisfaction that comes from helping others.
- Make memories that’ll last a lifetime.
Volunteering opportunities at 9th North Leeds Scout Group currently include:
- Group Scout Leader (a line management role)
- Assistant Beaver, Cub and Scout Section Leaders.
- Section Assistants at Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.
- Occasional Helpers at Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.
- Group Secretary.
- Group Treasurer.
- Group Administrator.
Role descriptions and lots more about Volunteering can be found on the Scouts website.
If you can only help occasionally, that’s okay. Whether you’d like to be an activity planner, craft creator, skill sharer or whatever, we will appreciate any time you can spare. Your contribution will make a huge difference in young people’s lives.
Occasional helpers and flexible role sharing makes it possible to fit volunteering around your availability. No two weeks are the same. Your contribution, however small, will make a huge difference to the lives of our young people..
If you can help in any way please get in touch.
