Everyone welcome – why not walk with us?

Monthly walks
Walking is FREE though you may incur incidental expenses such as transportation, parking and refreshment.
We usually meet on the last Saturday of each month, departing at 09.30 prompt from the free Car Park at Oakwood Church. Location.
Our walks are typically circular, between 4 and 7 miles with the shorter walks mainly during GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). They are sufficiently demanding to challenge some of our regulars – several of whom are over 80 years of age though most are younger. Some parents/grandparents walk with children. When our routes are more demanding we try to offer a shorter/easier ‘B’ route so that everyone can participate while remaining safely within their capability.
You will need boots or stout walking shoes, sufficiently warm/cool clothing, waterproofs, and a ‘day’ sized back-pack to carry liquid refreshment, a picnic lunch during BST (British Summer Time) and any medecines, sunscreen or first aid items you might need.
Summer walks during BST almost always involve Walkers bringing a packed lunch. In the Winter during GMT we take hot drinks and snacks but walk leaders will often aim to end the walk at a Pub or Café for warming, refreshment, nourishment and WCs.
We generally drive to the route start point which is rarely as much as an hour distant and frequently much nearer. Driving instructions are provided. We always aim to minimise the number of cars we take for reasons of environmental impact, reducing the pressure on available parking at our destination, and economy. It is our custom for those Walkers who are being driven to make an appropriate contribution towards their volunteer driver’s fuel costs.
At www.streetmap.co.uk you can view 1:25000 (Zoom Level 3) and 1:50,000 (Zoom Level 4) Ordnance Survey maps for our destination showing terrain and footpaths . A route planner, with road level and satellite images are available at Google Maps, while 3D flyable satellite images are available on Google Earth.
Walking Weekends
For many years the Oakwood Church Walking Group has travelled twice each year in April and again in October to walk further afield. Typically 10 to 15 of our Walkers will stay B&B for a 3 night weekend – Friday afternoon to Monday morning. Some walkers with touring caravans or motorhomes stay at nearby sites.
Not everyone wants to join in so please don’t feel that joining us for any of our monthly walks obligates you to come on a walking weekend.
